NY Times launches community news site

thelocalThe NY Times has launched, The Local to cover  neighbourhoods in Brooklyn and New Jersey.  It will be a mixed model of NY Times journalism and UGC as well as involving the  City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism.  Students will be helping in skills development for residents as well as having opportunities for internships on the sites.

Interestingly this is in the same area as the ‘Patch’ another hyperlocal news service, but backed by Google executive Tim Armstrong.

I suspect this is a common model for the future.  Over provision in ‘commercially attractive’ areas and under provision elsewhere.  It will be enlightening to see how this play out.
